The red line represents the journey I have made by bicycle, beginning in London January 5th 2010 and ending back in London on February 19th 2016. First, I crossed the Alps and moved into southern and then eastern Europe, making it into the Middle East just before war erupted in Syria. I then pedalled the length of Africa with my friend Nyomi Rowsell. Alone again I flew to southern Argentina and cycled north, crossing the Chile-Argentine border ten times, infatuated with the Andes, until I arrived into northern Colombia where I took a boat to Panama. I continued north, following the Pacific coast of Mexico and the US, crossing the Top of the World Highway from Canada into Alaska, and eventually hit the Arctic Ocean and could ride no further up the map. I flew next to Australia where I cycled the east coast with my then girlfriend Claire, hiked across the Pacific Island of New Caledonia and then cycled across seven Indonesian islands before setting out to bike from Singapore to the UK. My plans had to change when I got to India and was refused visas for Pakistan and Bangladesh. With independent travel not possible through Tibet, I decided to fly backwards, to Hong Kong, and cycle home from there, adding a very cold detour: China and Mongolia in the winter. Following a well cycled route through the ‘stans of central Asia, and a much less well cycled route into Afghanistan, I crossed into the Caucasus, doing a loop of Georgia with my friend Oli Davy, and finally I came to Europe, once again in the winter, riding this time beside the Danube.
I still cycle to work, but I’m a bit worried I’ll disappear one day, to be found 320 miles away, surrounded by empty packets of Supernoodles, trying to construct a makeshift shelter out of my work-shirt in a ditch.
